At this point in the book Pip leaves his village, and all he has ever known, to become a gentleman. This graphic represents how Pip follows his dream and is unique. Nobody else in his small village has ever been a gentleman, or has gone up in social status. But Pip breaks that barrier and shows that anything is possible. However, Pip is very lonely as a gentleman. When he gets to London he sees what being a gentleman is really like, and begins to think that its not so great afterall.
